The Princess of Wales's Traditional Christmas Musical Celebration Honours Unsung Heroes

The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Centred Around Compassion and Love

The focus of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a message before the carol service.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Musical Talent and Access

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians aided by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been supported by the charity, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the concert.

"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now a student at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for local food charities.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
