Star Wars fans have no shortage of titles when it comes to excellent interactive experiences showcasing the iconic energy blades, but the world envisioned by George Lucas is far beyond a battleground for conflict. Few series have understood this better than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was developed in the old-school computer role-playing game vein that made studios like Obsidian and BioWare famous. Now, after a number of delays and setbacks, a major gaming showcase has revealed that the community will soon be able to play a thematic heir to the beloved franchise. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
The Big Reveal
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is labeled "an upcoming single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, formerly of BioWare and the game director of the original KOTOR, is at the helm at Arcanaut Studios.
“When we crafted the original KOTOR, we wanted to forge a definitive Star Wars experience — designing an adventure that was made of all the things we dreamed of doing as Star Wars fans,” the developer said. “Now, 25 years after we first conceived that game, our goals are just as ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic signifies an chance to explore a modern vision of a ultimate Star Wars experience, using cutting-edge technology and game design, and an completely original story tailored specifically to fulfill the blend of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the core of KOTOR.”
An Unexpected Turn
The announcement is something of a shock, given that 2022 saw a contemporary effort at an Old Republic game get pushed back with no date. However, rumors had suggested that a remake of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been under development as recently as March 2025.
Here is the official description for the new title:
Developed by Arcanaut Studios in partnership with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.
The Legacy of KOTOR
The classic role-playing games, which have seen recent ports to platforms like the Switch, are known for their conversation-rich, decision-based, and stat-imbued approach to Star Wars. The games were influential enough that they inadvertently codified how people visualize the Old Republic age as a whole, to this day. The games ventured to question many tenets of Jedi lore that are often considered unquestionable, like whether the order and its understanding of the Force are right. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, took things in a much darker direction by posing the question if the world might not be wiser without the Jedi at all. Both games are venerated by fans decades after their release, but the second installment in particular is argued to be as one of the finest pieces of Star Wars media ever made.
A Fresh Start
And now, several years after receiving a atmospheric trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, the community is at last being granted another game in the comparable style. Given the appetite for rich games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a new take on Knights of the Old Republic that's developed with care has the potential to be wildly successful.
